Cold Process soapmaking is the act of mixing fixed oils ( like Olive oil, Coconut and Palm oil) with an alkali (Sodium Hydroxide or Lye). The result is a chemical process called saponification, where the composition of the oils change with the help of the lye to create a bar of soap.

Cold-process soaps melt into the skin for optimum moisturization, unlike other types of soap that can be hard, scratchy or drying. All the oils that are used in cold process soap making are luxurious natural ingredients that are completely preserved through the cold process. Also, cold process soap is cured for between four and six weeks, intensifying the scent of the essential oils which are used in it for theurapeutic reasons.

Handmade cold process soap offers you glycerine. Glycerine is created by the chemical process that happens during the soap making process. Most Commercial soaps actually extract the glycerine out of the soap and sell it as a seperate product. The Glycerine in soap acts as a hemectant. Meaning it attracts moisture to the skin. Commercial soaps available in store today are not really soap at all, but detergents. Detergents are petroleum based products, which leaves your skin feeling dry, itchy, and tight.

Soap has natural moisturizing qualities which have been stripped from modern factory soaps. While soap is used as a “cleanser”, factory soap is more like a “detergent” and will dry and irritate our skin. The reason why factory soaps do this to our skin and handmade soaps don’t is due to removal of glycerin (a natural bi-product of oil) by commercial soap makers for use in expensive moisturizers and other skin care products. The use of synthetic, harmful chemicals in factory soap has been scientifically proven to cause harm to the skin over long periods of time. Handmade soaps used all time by our ancestors due to their health benefits. Handmade soaps contain the natural glycerin (a humectant in nature) and draws moisture to our skin keeping it healthy and nourished. Handmade soaps have always been known for the effective cleaning power but scientific studies have shown the benefits of handmade soap to be incredible. It’s always been speculated that the handmade soap has built-in healing properties. Colloidal oatmeal’s scientific qualities are due to its many natural chemicals. Saponins (a form of natural detergent) comprise its cleaning ability. It also has a high level of starch and beta-glucan (a polysaccharide with inhibiting abilities), which is primarily responsible for its moisture-retentive properties. Colloidal oatmeal also contains phenols (a form of antiseptic), which encompass its anti-inflammatory, antioxidant and ultraviolet absorbing properties. It can also be used as a gentle exfoliating agent. These healing qualities can all be transmitted to skin via soap. The avenacins in colloidal oatmeal provide an antifungal, soap-like quality.

Colloidal oatmeal’s moisturizing properties enhance skin’s barrier function, which tends to be impaired in patients with rosacea (a chronic disease comprising facial redness, bumpiness and broken blood vessels). Its anti-inflammatory qualities could be used to reduce rosacea’s accompanying redness.
